Upcoming in Spec-Tanks for 2016

I’ve had a great year writing for Spec-Tanks in 2015.  I covered quite a bit of ground on posts I had planned at the beginning of the year, but I always have a huge queue of topics that I want to write on.

Here are some topics I hope to write about in 2016:

  • How to rescape your tank.  I did this last year, and it’s worth giving a few pointers.
  • I’m thinking of a rescape this year and adding some stone.  I hope to document this and write about the popular types of aquascaping stone.
  • How to set up a new tank, including an article on performing a fishless cycle.
  • I want to start some ‘Critter’ reviews where I discuss various breeds of fish or inverts and possibly even types of plants.

A few other topics that I hope to get to in 2016 but are contingent on time and my success in tackling these items:

  • Find a better aftermarket light for the Spec III and write a review.
  • Build a custom filtration media rack for the Spec V and document how to build it yourself.
  • Write about different types of filtration media.
  • Instructional on how to install a flow control valve to reduce the flow precisely.

Keep coming back and posting comments and questions.  If you have specific ideas, feel free to add them to the comments below.

  1. Hi Nate. Really looking forward to your articles to come! I’ve just purchased the Spec III, and will be doing most of the mods you have written about on this site. I just wanted to say “thank you” for all the great information you’ve shared. And the site itself looks great, and is very easy to navigate. I did click on the Amazon link before I made my purchases, so hope you get a little kick-back from that! 🙂

    Thanks again,
    Tom

    1. Very kind of you and you are very welcome!

Yes, the amazon revenue helps keep the site running and me motivated to make some new pages – Thanks!

  2. Just stumbled across your blog, I have both a Spec 5 and Spec 3. Do you have a ‘follow’ button or link anywhere on your site?

    1. Honestly, all I have is that RSS button at the top right corner, which I understand no one uses RSS feeds anymore. Sorry – I will put that down as something to improve. Thanks!

  3. For the replacement filter media tray a biocune media basket from an 8 or 12 fits almost perfectly into the spec v’s allowable space. It just needs a little training with a dremel on the top edges.
